Abstract
There are three influential works of Pāli grammar, namely, Kaccāyana-vyākaraṇa(KV), Saddanīti(Sadd), and Moggallāna-vyākaraṇa(MV). Out of them, MV is the most systematic work. It is because Moggallāna, the author of MV, adopts the distinguished method in developing his grammatical rules. The aim of the present research is to prove MV’s systemicity. Therefore, this research deals with some features of MV’s treatment. The method for the present research is to compare MV with the other Pāli grammars, viz., KV and Sadd, in the following respects: firstly, the basic structure of grammatical rule along with the forms of expression used in sutta; secondly, the use of grammatical device, i.e., the indicatory letter(anubandha); and thirdly, the form of suffix. As a result of the comparative analysis, the following three points are observed:Firstly, with regard to the basic structure of the grammatical rules, there is no great difference among the three texts. But, concerning the forms of expression, MV gives significant and concise expression in sutta by using a functional word ‘ādi’, while KV and Sadd enumerate all the items. Secondly, MV uses grammatical device, i.e., indicatory letter(anubandha) more often than the other texts. The use of anubandha is for the sake of concise and efficient expression instead of lengthy expression. Therefore, MV presents the concise and efficient rules by using anubandha. Thirdly, MV provides the initial form of suffixes which do not undergo grammatical operation yet. This means that there are more process to reach the final form of the verb or verbal form. On this point, MV is more systematic than the other texts. In short, MV presents the concise and efficient rules by using ‘ādi’ and ‘anubandha’. Besides, MV provides more grammatical rules for the sake of detailed process. In these respects, the systemicity of MV is clearly proved.
