Elective courses provide students with opportunities to select courses in areas of their need or interest. Korean as a second language learners may have different needs and levels in the four language skills--listening, speaking, reading and writing--and with an elective program the students can select courses depending on their needs for a more balanced development of the four language skills. The elective program can also offer various courses depending on the students' learning purpose or more specialized courses in specific areas such as Korean society and culture to meet the students' needs. For this study, a survey will be conducted on the students' demands for elective courses at Korean Language Institute, Yonsei University. Based on the survey result, this study attempts to develop an elective program for more effective Korean as a second language education.
