Abstract

This paper aims to elucidate the copying consciousness and actual reception of a classical novel consumer through an analysis of <Bang Gongja Jeon (方公子傳)> copied by Sahudang Yun Byeong-yeong (師侯堂 尹伯榮, 1888-1986). While specific information regarding the copyist, time, and circumstances is rarely simultaneously presented in the transcription records of classical novels, the <Bang Gongja Jeon> housed at the National Hangeul Museum is noteworthy for providing a highly detailed account of the copying context in its colophon. Consequently, this study has explored the actual reception of classical novels through Yun Byeong-yeong's case of copying <Bang Gongja Jeon> as follows. Firstly, tracing the life of Yun Byeong-yeong, the copyist of <Bang Gongja Jeon>, to determine the conditions and motivation for copying the work, it was confirmed that the cultural refinement she cultivated as a member of an elite sadaebu (scholar-official) family and the hardship of her married life as a woman were the direct preconditions and motivations for copying this work. Secondly, the patterns of textual alteration that appeared during the copying process were examined. This analysis confirmed that Yun Byeong-yeong was an active reader who sought to enhance the work's coherence and consistency by modifying unnatural parts and strengthening its verisimilitude by correcting clear narrative errors. Thirdly, the narrative perception revealed during the copying process was explored. It was specifically confirmed that Yun Byeong-yeong, as an individual reader, focused her reception of the narrative on the protagonist's state of liberation from the duties of a woman within <Bang Gongja Jeon>. In conclusion, Yun Byeong-yeong's copying of <Bang Gongja Jeon> is viewed not merely as an act of transcription but as a subjective act by a female reader who interpreted and accepted the work by projecting her own life and inner self. This case is significant for re-evaluating the role of the reader in discussions concerning classical novels and for expanding the understanding of how women in that era consumed literature.
