‘듣는 문학’으로서의 고전소설의 현대적 향유 양상과 방향 − <방한림전>을 중심으로 −

고전소설의 낭독 혹은 구연적 속성과 역사적 사례 등에 대한 관심은 지속되어 왔다. 그러나 복합양식 매체의 영향 아래 고전소설 듣기의 양상은 훨씬 다양화되고 다분화 되었으며 듣는 문학으로서 고전소설의 위상과 문화 또한 달라지고 있어 이를 점검하고 방향을 모색하는 일이 필요하다. 분석 자료는 대중 매체에서 일반 대중들이 쉽게 고전소설을 접할 수 있는 음성 중심의 청각 의존적 콘텐츠들이다. 대상 작품인 <방한림전>은 여성의 주체적 삶과 젠더의식, 양성 평등사상, 소수자 문제 등 시의성 있는 사회적 쟁점을 다루고 있기에 청자들의 관심을 끌고 있다. 듣는 문학으로 고전소설의 현대적 향유 양상은 청자의 수용 방식을 기준으로 ‘듣기’, ‘보면서 듣기’, ‘연행에 참여하여 듣기’로 나누어 볼 수 있다. ‘듣기’는 화자의 행위에 따라 화자의 읽기를 듣기와 화자의 이야기를 듣기로, ‘보면서 듣기’는 매체의 속성에 따라 그림을 보면서 듣기와 영상을 보면서 듣기로 나눌 수 있다. ‘연행에 참여하여 듣기’는 연행의 속성에 따라 일인 연행을 듣기와 대화로서의 연행을 듣는 방식이 가능하다. 각 방식은 콘텐츠의 내용이나 화자와 청자 간의 상호소통성, 활용의 목적과 맥락에서 차이가 있다. 듣는 문학으로서 고전소설은 옛이야기, 문학, 교양이라는 범주 안에 위치하고 있다. 각각은 고전소설에 대한 서로 다른 태도와 각기 다른 활용의 목적을 보인다는 점에서 듣기의 용도에 맞게 스크립트를 변주해야 한다. 또한, 고전소설이 그림이나 영상을 넘어 소리와 직접적인 관련성을 갖는다는 점에서 시청각적 상상력을 재고하는 방안을 모색해야 한다. 끝으로 오늘의 고전소설 듣기가 매체를 통한다는 점에서 고전소설의 소리 내어 읽기와 말하기, 이야기하기, 연행하기 등을 활성화하고 전문적인 고전 이야기꾼은 물론 일시적 이야기꾼들에 대해서도 관심이 필요하다. 고전소설 듣기를 기점으로 읽기를 상호적으로 연결하는 방안도 생각해 볼 수 있고 듣기를 비계로 하여 고전소설 읽기로, 더 나아가 고전소설에 대한 관심으로 이어져야 한다.
Abstract
This study aims to examine the modern aspects of ‘listening’ among the ways of enjoying classical novels and to suggest directions for revitalizing classical novels as ‘listening literature.’ The analysis data are audio contents that allow listeners to easily access classical novels through mass media. The target work is <Bang Han-rim Jeon>, which attracts listeners’ attention because it deals with timely social issues such as women’s subjective lives, gender awareness, gender equality, and minority issues. Today, ‘Listening’ to classical novels can be divided into listening to the speaker’s reading and listening to the speaker’s story depending on the speaker’s actions. ‘Listening while watching’ can be divided into listening while watching a picture and listening while watching a video depending on the nature of the medium. ‘Listening while participating in the performance’ can be divided into listening to a one-person performance and listening to the performance as a conversation depending on the way of performance. As listening to classical novels shows a different attitude toward classical novels and a different purpose of use, it is necessary to vary the script according to the purpose. In addition, listening to classical novels requires interest in auditory imagination because it is directly related to sound. Finally, in listening to classical novels through media, professional storytellers as well as amateur storytellers should be educated through the activation of reading classical novels aloud, speaking, telling stories, and performing.
