Abstract
Juseo Bunryu (The Classified Compilation of Zhu Xi’s Writings, 朱書分類) is a late Joseon Dynasty text that organizes a wide range of Zhu Xi’s writings into categorized themes. This compilation not only contains a wealth of valuable material, but also reveals a clearly defined structural framework based on thematic sections (mok, 目), which serve as major topical headings within each volume (gwon, 卷). This paper focuses on the content related to the Five Constant Virtues—benevolence (仁), righteousness (義), propriety (禮), wisdom (智), and trustworthiness (信). Juseo Bunryu begins with a mok explicitly bearing the title of these virtues and continues across several interrelated mok that explore themes centered on benevolence and its role within the broader discourse on the Five Virtues. By systematically analyzing this structure, the paper identifies key issues and dimensions of Zhu Xi’s theory of the Five Virtues. It further demonstrates that a comprehensive understanding can be achieved—one that includes the organic interrelations among benevolence (仁), impartiality or public-mindedness (公), and empathy or forbearance (恕), along with the practical implications associated with Zhu Xi’s thought on self-cultivation. This analysis not only reveals the depth of understanding that late Joseon Neo-Confucian scholars had of Zhu Xi’s philosophy, but also suggests that, beyond sectarian affiliations, they maintained a balanced and nuanced grasp of Zhu Xi’s broader intellectual perspective.
