Abstract

This paper is to study the first volume of the Qing Ren Shu Jian(清人書簡), which discovered recently, and to examine the 15 letters exchanged between Joseon scholar, Kim Jeong Hee and Chinese Literati who were active during the Qing Dynasty. This paper provides a detailed examination of the content of these letters and the interactions between the literati of the two countries. Qin Ren Shu Jian(清人書簡) is a collection of correspondences compiled between 1813 and 1882, documenting the exchanges between members of the Chusa Kim family's envoy missions and Qing Dynasty literati, including Yezhishen(葉志詵) and Wongshukun(翁樹崑). This collection consists of four volumes and contains over 70 letters written by more than 40 Qing Dynasty literati. The first volume consists of 15 letters written by 14 individuals, including Yezhishen(葉志詵) and Wongshukun(翁樹崑). The recipients of the 15 letters include Chusa, his father Kim Nogyong, his younger brother Kim Myeonghui, and their close associates. The senders were descendants of the families of Ong Banggang and Ruan Yuan, who had direct exchanges with Chusa. The letters were written from the early 19th century, shortly after Chusa's visit to Beijing, through the mid-19th century. In addition to everyday greetings and expressions of deep friendship, the letters primarily focus on introducing and elaborating on books, rubbings of inscriptions, calligraphy, and paintings that were in circulation at the time. All of these letters are handwritten manuscripts by Qing literati and serve as valuable primary sources for studying the academic and cultural exchanges between 19th-century Joseon and Qing literati, as well as the cultural activities of the Chusa family. This paper interprets the manuscripts of difficult letters written in semi-cursive script(行草), and verifies the backgrounds of the senders and recipients, the context of their exchanges at the time, and the period during which the letters were written. This research provided foundational material for understanding the textual content of the 15 letters and enabled a detailed identification of the characteristics and interactions of the personnel from both countries active at the time. Furthermore, it offers a new perspective for studying the diplomatic missions of the Chusa family and their associates in the 19th century, as well as the cultural exchanges between the two countries.
