이야기식 설교(Narrative Preaching), 잘 되어지고 있는가? : 이야기식 설교의 바람직한 한국적 적용을 위한 재고찰

초록

일방적 소통이 주류를 이룬 설교자 중심적인 설교와, 논리적 명제와 성서에 대한 강의식 설명이 설교 내용의 주류를 이룬 이유로, 말씀의 소통이 부족했다는 자성의 목소리가 약 60여년 전부터 북미 설교학계에서 울려 퍼지기 시작했다. 그래서 등장한 것이 ‘청중들에게 경험되어지고 들리는 설교’란 기치로 탄생한 ‘새로운 설교학 운동’이다. 물론 북미의 기독교적 상황과 한국 교회의 상황의 차이가 반드시 있겠지만, 전통적 성서해석과 설교방식이 가득한 한국교회의 설교 상황은 당시 북미의 설교 상황과 큰 차이가 없다. 이런 이유로 교회의 쇠퇴 현상과, 자성적으로 일어나고 있는 변화의 목소리 가운데, 새로운 설교학 운동의 설교학적 이론과 모델들은 현재 한국 교회에 많이 소개되어 있다. 특히 이 운동의 한 결과물인 ‘이야기식 설교’는 비교적 인기있는 설교형식이 되었다. 그러나 한국 설교 강단에서의 이야기식 설교의 실천적 모습을 보며 그 긍정적인 측면과 함께, 적용에 있어서의 몇 가지 보완해야 할 점들이 서서히 발견되었다. 이를 위해 본 논문은 현재 한국 교회 강단에서 쓰여지고 있는 이야기식 설교의 문제점들이 발생한 구체적인 설교학적 이유를 파악하고, 그것을 극복할 발전적 적용의 가능성을 모색하기 위한 비판적 연구를 목적으로 하였다. 이 목적에 부합하기 위해 이야기식 설교의 대표적 학자인 유진 라우리의 설교학적 이론에 대한 심도 있는 연구와 함께 이야기식 설교의 학문적 뿌리가 되는 새로운 설교학 운동의 대표적 학자들에 대해 논하였고, 아울러 새로운 설교학 운동과 이야기식 설교에 대해 비판적인 학자들의 논지와 의견들을 가지고 상호간 학문적 대화를 시도하였다. 이런 대화를 통해, 하나의 설교학적 방법으로서의 이야기식 설교가 한국교회의 설교의 장에서 더욱 효과적인 설교학적 소통의 방법으로 사용될 수 있도록 하는 제언들을 도출할 수 있었다.

Abstract

From the late 1950s, many reflective voices were raised voicing the concern that Christian preaching in the American pulpit had become preacher-centered, one-way communication, taking the form of logical and propositional lectures. As a result, the New Homiletic movement was born, bearing the motto preaching is “to be experienced and heard” accompanied by a “turn to the listener” who was to function as preaching partner. Although there are contextual differences between the churches of North America and Korea, the traditional preaching and biblical interpretation prevalent in the Korean churches is not so different from the North American churches. For this reason, and prompted by voices seeking reform, several theories and models of the New Homiletic have been introduced into the Korean church, which has been struggling with decline. Among these, narrative preaching has become relatively popular in the Korean pulpit. However, although it has several positive aspects, there are a few aspects of narrative preaching that need to be adapted for its development in the Korean context. The purpose of this research paper was thus to examine the problems with the type of narrative preaching that has been used in Korean pulpits and to explore the possibility of developments which can overcome those problems. To do this, I researched the theories and practices of narrative preaching developed by Eugene Lowry and the New Homiletic and sought to bring them into conversation with other scholars who stand on the opposite side. In this conversation, I discovered several suggestions that could lead to narrative preaching being used more effectively in the Korean pulpit.
