2009년은 칼빈 탄생 500주년을 맞아 칼빈관련 많은 학술행사들 중에 목회자로서의 칼빈과 그의 ‘목회적 돌봄’이란 주제로 학술대회를 갖게 되어 기쁘다. 칼빈은 제네바에서 목회를 시작하며 1937년, 1941년에 2개의 교회법 초안을 작성하는데 중심적인 역할을 감당하였다. 이 속에는 제네바 교회가 어떻게 목회해야하는지의 대강이 담겨있다. 이러한 두 교회 법안은 칼빈의 독창적 작품이 아니라는 것이다. 칼빈은 제네바에 도착하기에 앞서 바젤에 머무르며 이 도시의 지도자인 외콜람파디우스의 입장인 교회와 정부 사이에는 정치적으로 분리돼야 한다는 견해에 영향을 받았다. 칼빈은 교회와 정부는 맡은 영역이 다르므로 교회는 목회자인 목사가 주도해야 한다는 독립성을 확보하고자 했다. 교회법 초안은 “질서있고 잘 지도된” 교회를 위해서 교회의 예전과 설교, 교육에 대한 강조가 두드러지게 나타난다. 이러한 칼빈의 교회법 내용은 현대적 목회 돌봄 이해에 있어서 화해 기능에 속한다. 목회의 기능을 치유, 지탱, 안내와 후에 화해의 기능이 추가되었다. 화해의 목회적 돌봄은 대표적 예로서 유럽의 라인강 유역과 그 아래 지역에서 영혼의 돌봄의 기능에서 화해를 심각하게 취급하고 실천하였다. 칼빈의 이러한 교회 훈련의 실례를 그가 스트라스부르크에서 3년여간 머물면서 그곳의 종교개혁지도자인 부처에게서 배운 것이다. 칼빈은 목회훈련은 예수께서 창안하신 것이며, 이의 구체적 표현인 화해의 목회적 돌봄을 몸의 근육의 훈련처럼 필요한 것으로 보았다. 이렇게 중요한 교회의 제도일지라고 교회 자체를 위해서 행해질 수 있어, 신자의 욕구를 무시할 수 있는 한계가 존재한다. 그래서 목회훈련을 조심스럽게 실천하는 것이 필요하며, 특별히 정과 관계를 중시하는 한국인의 목회에는 더더욱 그러해야 할 것이다.
Abstract
The year 2009 was the 500th anniversary of John Calvin's birth. Among the many academic conferences that were held to mark the occasion one of them was a conference we very happily conducted to discuss Calvin as a Minister of Pastoral Care. When Calvin began his ministry in Geneva he played a central role in submitting drafts of two ecclesiastical laws in 1537 and 1541. They contained general principles for ministry in the churches of Geneva. But the idea for these two laws did not originate with Calvin himself. Before arriving in Geneva he stayed for a while in Basel and there he got a sense of Oecolampadius' thought that the church and the Christian city were not identical but separate entities. Calvin, following the approach of Oecolampadius, tried to obtain autonomy for the church in Geneva from the civil government regarding religious issues such as pastoral disciplines. The church law drafts focused mainly on worship, sermons and education in order to build up disciplined and well regulated churches. The church law drafts had to do with the function of reconciliation within pastoral care. The function of reconciliation was a later addition to the healing, sustaining and guiding functions of pastoral care. The reconciling function was seriously taken up and well used in the area beside and below the Rhine. Calvin followed the model of church discipline he had learnt from Martin Bucer during his three years in Strasbourg. Calvin believed that this pastoral discipline was instituted by Jesus and that its specific manifestation through reconciliation in pastoral care was just as necessary as excercise is for the body. Although it is so important for the church institution, there could be a possibility of doing it just for the church itself. Then there could be a danger of neglecting the needs of the lay people. Thus, it is necessary to practise the pastoral discipline cautiously, especially for Korean people for whom Jeoung (tender feelings) and relationships are so important.
