20세기 중반 북미 설교학계를 중심으로 빅뱅과 같은 거대한 움직임이 시작되었다. 혹자는 그것을 전혀 새로운 패러다임을 추구하게 된 ‘설교학의 코페루니쿠스적 혁명’이 일어났다고 표현하기도 했고, 설교학 물줄기가 완전히 다른 방향으로 흐르게 되었다고 주장하기도 한다. 이미문화 사회적으로 거대한 혁명이 일어나고 있었기 때문에 그것에 대처하기 위한 하나의 설교학의 새로운 추구였고, 그러한 추구가 만들어 낸 하나의 큰 물줄기였다. 시대적 변화의 흐름 속에서 시작된 설교학의 새로운 이 흐름은 흔히 한 설교학자의 책에서 그 시원(始原)을 찾게 된다. 거기에서 발원된 물줄기는 북미 설교학계뿐만 아니라 여러 지역의 설교 사역에도 깊은 영향을 끼친 하나의 거대한 물줄기를 형성하였다. 물론 그는 이런 새로운 물줄기를 만들어 내려는 의도성을 가지고 시작한 것은아니었지만, 이런 변화의 대문을 열어놓는 선구적 역할을 수행한 것으로평가를 받고 있다. 바로 헨리 그래디 데이비스(Henry Grady Davis)이다. 설교 형태와 관련하여 과거와는 전혀 다른 제시를 함으로써 현대 설교학진영에서 설교 형태와 관련하여 과거와는 다른 인식 변화를 불러일으킨다. 그가 제시한 혁신적 제안은 현대 설교학 진영에 설교 형태와 관련하여 새로운 사고의 장을 열어주었다. 본 연구는 ‘우리가 유산으로 물려받은 것’이 무엇인지에 대한 명확한 이해를 위해 현대 설교학의 ‘선구자’ 혹은 ‘예언자’로 칭함을 받는 데이비스가 제시한 설교 형태와 관련하여 그가 제시한 설교 형태에 관한 주장을 살펴보는 데 그 목적이 있다.
Abstract
An entirely different movement in the homiletical camp of North America has been taken place since the 20th century in the understanding of the homiletical form. Som have called it a “Copernican Revolution” or an entirely new stream in homiletics. This new stream which has helped the preacher to pursue entirely new homiletical paradigm shift appeared in Design for Preaching. This was book on homiletics which suggested an organic form in preaching. It provides new understanding of the homiletical form and works with “many contemporary issues in homiletical thought and research.” Davis argues that “the relation of substance and form in the communication of thought is the kind of relation that exist between living issue and organism,” and content and form are not separable. An aim of this article is to survey our heritage as Davis suggested.
