Abstract

Biden’s victory in the 2020 presidential election was due mostly to voters in large metropolitan suburbs, especially in important battleground states. Suburbs that were already Democratic-leaning before 2020 tilted more so and turned away from President Trump in the 2020 presidential election. The shift of suburbs follows a trend from the 2018 midterm elections, when voters in increasingly diverse and highly educated suburbs swept many Republican members of Congress out of office. In this context, this article aims to analyze party support of voters in 46 suburban Congressional Districts of 8 battleground states. The results of analyses show that suburbs, particularly urban suburbs in close proximity to the urban center strongly contributed to Biden’s victories in key battleground states of Georgia, Arizona, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin, as indicated by the strong effect of population density. The analysis also shows that college graduates, non-white voters, and high-income voters are more likely to vote for Biden than voters without college degree, white voters, and low-income voters. The significant effect of income level in the additional models suggests the continuing flight of bluecollar workers from the Democratic party.
