Abstract

This article analyzes the votes that Obama and Romney received in the 2012 U.S. presidential election and identifies the social groups in support of each candidate. It then explores the reasons for Obama's victory and puts into perspective the Second Obama Administration. The findings are fourfold. First, the exit polls indicate that Obama won thanks to an overwhelming support from various non-mainstream lower social strata and groups despite the mainstream sectors' favor for Romney. Second, the electoral win by a loose coalition of non-mainstream lowly groups was possible due to the fundamental changes in American social structures. Third, Obama actively courted various non-mainstream groups through appeasing policies and shrewd electoral strategies, while Romney rather alienated and antagonized them with rigid exclusionist ideological stances. Fourth, Obama needs to take bipartisan postures and reach out for Republicans and so-called mainstream voters in order to solve a host of difficult tasks in line.
