Abstract

Abstract in Korean In this paper, I have looked closely at the exchange of Lee Sang Jeok((李尙迪), one of the famous literary men of the 19th century Joseon, and the literary men in the Pan family including Pan Zun Qi(潘遵祁), Pan Xi Fu(潘希甫), and Pan Zeng Shou(潘曾綬), and especially Pan Zuyin(潘祖蔭). The family of Pan was a prominent nobleman family of Gangnam in the Qianlong era for a long time that produced many book painters and literary men in the family based on abundant books and collection. Therefore, the contents of exchanges with these men and Joseon literary men such as Lee Sang Jeok are naturally composed of epigraph and calligraphy. Lee Sang Jeok and the literary men of Pan family first met in Beijing in the first month of 1845. At that time, Lee Sang Jeok, who entered Peking as an interpreter of a delegation, carried his teacher Choosa Kim Jeong Hee's [Se-han Do] and met with the literary men in Beijing and Pan Zhun Qi and Pan Zeng Wei brothers joined the gathering and they formed a bond of literary. After that, there were continuous exchanges, and their interactions can be divided into two major aspects. One is poetic exchange. It was mainly exchanged with Pan Zeng Wei, and through the route of this exchange, the theory of linguistics of the 'Changzhou literary group', which was popular in the Qing Dynasty at that time, was spread to Choosa literary group. Because I have explained this in my previous paper, I just mentioned briefly here. Next is the exchange of literary works, poetry and painting and metal stone rubbings. In this part, the exchanges were with the son of Pan Zeng Shou, Pan Zi Yun, and the exchanges started early when he asked for the yeongryeon(A letter written ornamented on a pillar or wall) of Choosa, and it is done around metal and stone rubbings or picture books. In addition, through sharing and reviewing precious metal stone epigraphs of the two countries, they confirmed the desire of learning calligraphy and paintings and built their friendship. Although we cannot say there were deep calligraphy discussions between them based on the presently available literature, we can confirm that tradition and customs of calligraphy were communicated to each other through exchanges between them. As a matter of fact, from the simplistic and elegant calligraphy that Hanwayeon shows as the contents of the exchange, and the discussion on the transformation and creation of calligraphy that <Guhwache>shows, we are able to observe that learning drawing at the time was not restricted to one thing, but people learn various things to emphasize one’s personality. This influenced the formation of retro calligraphy and engraving art, which later became popular in Choosa literary family. It is also noteworthy that the connection of epigraphs between Pan family literary men and Lee Sang Jeok continued with Lee Sang Jeok's disciples. In particular, through the connection with Lee Sang Jeok, Pan Zuyin has been able to complete 24 volumes of 『Haidong Jinshi Zhi(海東金石志)』by collecting and studying a wide range of epigraphs paintings of Joseon and Japan, and it could be used as materials for Oh Gyeong Seok’s 『SamhanGeumSeokrok』
