Abstract

In this paper, I analyzed the time awareness in the poem of Heo Sukyeong. Especially, this paper apprehended the aspects of time awareness through recognition of reminiscence and moment. In doing so, it established how characteristics of time awareness contributed to the poem of Heo Sukyeong. In the poem, it frequently shows the self recognition of time and this characteristic eventually affects the constructing of the world of poem. Thus, establishing time awareness in the poem of Heo Sukyeong becomes the necessary key of understanding the world of poem that he desired. The effect of memory and reminiscence in the poem makes the lyrical subject to liberate from the simple order of time. The act of reminiscence plays the role as a liberation from general past point of view and forming the present that subject exists. Moreover, the archaeological imagination of Heo Sukyeong becomes the source of ‘reminiscence’ action that reforms present by bringing out the past. Heo Sukyong maintains the desperate time that self experienced by reminiscence. Then, the phenomenon of the past that summoned to the memory affects the psychological state of self and formation of mood of the poem and highlights the desperation of the present time. As a result, the past time that summoned to memory of narrator forms the present and shows the autonomous attitude toward the world. Moreover, reference of Benjamin and Husserl showed in the poem of Heo Sukyeong supports the explanation of these aspects of time awareness. The ‘moment’ in the poem is the point that past gathers and the source of powerful energy that released from present to the future. For that reason, interest of the moment means the interest of the past and concentration for present and the future. The poem focuses on this ‘moment.’ The frequent appearance of the word ‘moment’ and ‘the time’ in the poem shows the poet’s time awareness that wishes to focus on the ‘moment’. This characteristic also attributes to express the ‘nihilism’ in the poem. The role of the ‘moment’ in the poem of Heo Sukyeong is never weak. The practical act of self that focuses on the ‘moment’ shows the denial of the reality, and also becomes the power to form psychological time of ‘lost’ and ‘grief’. Moreover, it develops to ‘criticism’ toward the present situations and exists as showing the one aspect of ‘nihilism’
