Abstract

This paper examined the thought of timelessness and ethics of non-existence that appear in the poetry of Kim Haengsook. In order to investigate what the ultimate meaning found in the reason of timelessness and what structure that time is composed of that appear in the poetry of Kim Haengsook, the logics of Deleuze on time were referred to. Deleuze presents the time of an entity that is incapable of perception and talks about the creation of new time of the divided ego at a time when realistic temporality is destroyed. Such temporality unfolds through cases such as dreams, fantasy, and the death of the ego. However, the detailed mode of time changes gradually depending on the time of publishing the collection of poems. What is displayed by the poet in the collection of poems for about 10 years from the time of the first to the third collection is that she confirmed the otherness (death) within her, and displays that she focuses on searching for things different from her by becoming mixed in with others. The poet composes this process as a time of dreams, unconscious fantasy, and death. And by cutting off a side of the unconscious that store the experiences of the past to connect to the time of reality, the forgotten past loaded into the present. Here, the hardened homogeneous time is dissolved and the past and present overlaps into a single temporality. The past forgotten as such is changed to an unfamiliar time for the advent of new time. The dead, or ghost, that appears at this time reveals the self with sensory organs such as the nose, eyes, ears, and face and it tells the story about the return of those exiled from reality. The skewed gaps are also thought of as the distances made from the concrete relationships with others. From the fourth to the most recent collection of poems, what stands out the most is that the ego that preempts the future (death) appears frequently. In this collection of poems, the egos of the poems are those who have already died, and one’s own death is discovered or witnessed by others. The format of time that introduces death of the future that has not yet occurred rapidly into the present does not bring the past to the present to switch the past and present, but is made up in an attitude of welcoming the other – the dead by acknowledging death – ghost to be ultimately reached. The ghosts that have no form or physical organs appear as shadows only with voices, and it visualizes the non-existent form that exceeds the verbal system that dominates reality. Here, time is divided into two directions of past and future, and it further expands the temporality of being completely empty within the text. The gap opened so that others can pass by throwing one’s self in the land of the dead is the place where the dead, or ghosts, reside, and it is given meaning as time and space that realizes the political and ethical meaning of writing poetry. The form of timelessness and non-existence in the poems of Kim Haengsook pierces through the temporality of reality to face others (death), and shows the entity trying to open new time by converting the life of the ego. It can be said that this provides a path to search for the coexistence with the relational ethics of humans.
