초록
This paper examines how power distance affects the translation of movie posters. Deriving from Hofstede’s cultural dimension theory, power distance is the extent to which people accept unequally distributed power. I assume that power distance is closely related to collectivism and uncertainty avoidance, affecting the translation of movie posters in certain ways. For this study, 90 pairs of American movie posters and their Korean-translated movie poster counterparts are selected for data analysis. This analysis is divided into three categories: translation of the headline, the number of text elements, and appeal of the headline. The results suggest the movie poster translation reflects Korean culture through high power distance, collectivism, and high uncertainty avoidance. In addition, the translation of posters not only serves as the consideration of power distance, but also simultaneously constitutes power distance through the posters
