시간명사 구문에 관한 논의

Abstract

This paper examined nouns such as ‘때, 적, 무렵, 즈음, 녘, 동안, 지, 중, 시’, (i)which possessed a meaning related to ‘time’ and (ii) which were modified by an adjectival relative clause. In order to examine to these nouns, this paper tried to group these nouns into a category (hence after: temporal nouns) and scrutinized the grammatical characteristics of temporal nouns. In addition, this paper examined the structure formed by combining an adjectival clause and a temporal noun(heace after: the temporal noun construction). In order to figure out the characteristics of the temporal noun construction, this paper reviewed the characteristics and types of adjectival clauses in Korean mentioned by previous studies (Ku et al. 2015). According to the syntactic-semantic relationship with the head noun that follows the adjectival clause in the previous studies, it was classified into a relative clause, an equivalent clause, and a linked clause (Kim 2002). In particular, there has been a discussion to analyze the construction combined by the linking clause and the head noun as a subordinate clause or an adverbial clause rather than a noun phrase (Bae 2002, Yoo 2007, Ku et al. 2015). In this paper, even though the temporal noun construction looks like being included in the construction built by the combining a linking clause and a noun, the temporal noun construction can be distinguished from the construction built by the combination of a linking clause and a noun. In other words, previous studies (Bae, 2002, Ku et al., 2015) was explained that the construction built by combining a linking clause and a noun would be always analyzed as a subordinate clause or an adverbial clause. However, after examining a few of examples. it was revealed that the temporal noun construction did not always work as a dependent clause or adverbial clause. When the temporal noun construction could be realized as a general noun phrase, it was realized as a main component in the sentence, whereas when the temporal noun construction was realized as an adverbial clause, it served as an expression form to express the aspect in Korean.
