Abstract

This thesis is a comparative study of the art of writing between the old novel Seo Jinsa Jeon and the new novel Masangru. Seo Jinsa Jeon was composed of refuge stories during the Foreign Disturbance of 1866 and the Military Mutiny of 1882, and written around in 1910. In Seo Jinsa Jeon, the main characters were depicted in a humorous manner, so that the Seo Jinsa Jeon outstandingly presents the writing style and aesthetic characteristics of a Pansori-type novel in the aspects of the writing style, configuration on characters and the main theme. In short, the significance of Seo Jinsa Jeon is that it shows characteristics of a new Pansori-type novel using a contemporary historic occasion and refuge stories. Masangru was adapted from an unofficial historical tale Kim Yoen-gwang and written by Min Jun-ho in 1912. The author of Masangru highly magnified the heroine’s adversity and considerably altered the details of the original novel. In addition, a married couple, Taoist Kwon and his wife, was described as tragic refugees in the unjust and outrageous late Joseon Dynasty, and configuration on the savior was reinforced. As the result, Masangru claims to standard for other aesthetics of a novel such as ‘tragic beauty’ and ‘interest’ in lieu of ‘humor’ of Seo Jinsa Jeon.
