Abstract

<Seojinsa-jeon>, whose historical background encompasses the French invasion to Korea in 1866 to the Military Riot of 1882, is a newly adapted old novel in the form of Korean transcription that depicts the refugee life of a family. <Seojinsa-jeon> describes two generations of a family evacuating from the historic events such as the French invasion to Korea in 1886 and the Military Riot of 1882. The writer dealt with episodes that happened to the refugees in interesting ways. In addition, the recognition of the reality of the times and the orientation of a life in drastically changing historic situations were captured and symbolized. Particularly, it is notable in the aspects of the attitudes on realistic proportional division and family love. The main character, Seochampan, is not a patriot who is concerned about Korea’s crisis of the times but a normal person who only wants to protect his family and himself, which is very conspicuous. The writer tries to tell us that the attitude to life of realistic proportional division and petty-bourgeois family love enable people to overcome fear even during an era that threatens a tranquil life. A variety of techniques and aesthetics from the previous Pansori-type novels were utilized in the <Seojinsa-jeon>, and there are a lot of interesting factors from the perspective of the novel composition technique. Because of this, it is obvious that the <Seojinsa-jeon> is the most conspicuous among the newly adapted old novels.
