Baek, Mihyun. 2010. The Semantic Extensions of the Image-schema IN-OUT in Korean: The Case of the Verbs 'nata' and 'tulta'. Discourse and Cognition 17.3, 111-138. This paper aims to describe the way that the concept OUT and IN are extended into the various abstract senses in Korean. In fact, OUT and IN are linguistically encoded into several ways in Korean. First, they can be expressed with nominal and adposition, -pakk-ey/-eulo and -an-ey/-eulo. Second, these concepts are merged into the verb stem, as in ppay-ta and neh-ta. Third, OUT and IN are represented as verbs na-ta and tul-ta, which also incorporate into the other verb stems, yielding complex verb phrases V-na or na-V and V-tul or tul-V. That is, the dynamic sense of this PATH is more frequent and realized into the verb form. We will focus on the last type. Different but related senses of OUT and IN are mediated by metaphor, which maps structures across experiential domains, and is a major mechanism to explain the semantic extension from the physical core sense. Just like in English counterparts, the alternative viewpoints affect the way of extension. We will examine the value assignment related to view points and to the deictic verbs. Finally, it will be confirmed that OUT and IN are not always located at the two opposite meanings, especially in the abstract domains. (Chungnam National University)

Just like in English counterparts, the alternative viewpoints affect the way of extension. We will examine the value assignment related to view points and to the deictic verbs.
