초록
This paper aims to show how Korean people conceptualize morality metaphorically through the analysis of metaphorical expressions describing moral or immoral acts within the framework of conceptual metaphor theory. The expressions analyzed are extracted from the two Korean dictionaries and from newspaper articles or broadcasting reports posted on the Internet. In Korean, it is shown that people understand morality through an ontological metaphor ACTION IS THING, thinking of morality as cleanness of things and immorality as dirtiness. Thus, it is no wonder a complex range of deep-rooted evils, which a current framing war centers on in Korea, is also metaphorically thought of dirt or rubbish, for those evil practices disrupts physical well-being of human life. Cleansing out such deep-rooted evils as corruption, bribery, wrongful practices, or power-trip requires holding evil-doers or offenders accountable for those evils. In view of moral accounting metaphor, MORAL INTERACTION IS FINANCIAL TRANSACTION, any endeavor to pay off those evils must be a moral act, but conservatives and progressives are in serious conflict. This is attributed to the fact that the concept of deep-rooted evil is a case of an essentially contested concept.
