A Study on Moral Metaphor in Political Discourses

The study aims to scrutinize various aspects of moral metaphor in the discourses of major political leaders in the United States. The theoretical basis of this study is the philosophic views on the morality of Lakoff & Johnson(2003), and the framework for analysis is based on the moral metaphor classification chart of Lakoff(2009). For the convenience of the analysis, three issues (i.e., war and terrorism, illegal immigration and refugees, and crime) were selected. The following facts can be found in the study: First, the Morality which is related to the well-being of people is the core concept of politics. Second, morality is understood metaphorically. Third, moral metaphors are found in variously, regardless of differences in political parties. Forth, different moral metaphor may be applied to the same issue. Fifth, to better understand the moral metaphor in political discourses, understanding on frame theory is also required. Finally, this study will be able to contribute to providing basic information for the further studies on the universality and variation of metaphor in culture.
