Abstract

This paper is a survey on Functional-typological approach to language. What are the characteristics of the functional-typological approach to language? What are the assumptions and methodology the functional-typological approach adopts to explain specific structures in individual languages? To answer these questions, we have presented various examples of functional-typological analyses, in which functional explanations (semantic/pragmatic considerations based on cognitive/conceptual universals) play important roles. The objects we have examined in the paper are as follows: 1) Direct and Indirect Causation 2) Alienable possession vs. Inalienable possession 3) Phenomena controlled by Animacy 4) Conceptual difference of Volition /Control reflected in morpho-syntactic behaviour 5) Affectedness and various marking on Patients
