Abstract
In this paper we discussed Korean parts of speech in a typological perspective. Traditionally, Korean parts of speech have been analyzed in the grammatical framework of European languages as in the description of other linguistic areas. The typological approach, however, shows us that an individual language needs to be given a unique treatment with its own characteristic features in consideration. In this respect verbs and adjectives are considered to belong to the same category in Korean, though they function as a separate categories in European languages. The Korean conjunctive markers are realized as adpositions, verbal endings or other peripheral forms. Korean language has some typologically distinctive word classes such as ideophones and classifiers, while it lacks the category of articles, impersonal pronouns and the introductory particle, which are commonly found in European languages. We use the presence and lack of these categories in classifying languages into different subtypes in the typological approach.
