Abstract
To express plurality Korean has two options, either using a plural noun form (with the plurality marker ‘deul') or using a bare noun without the plurality marker. Many studies have claimed that the difference between the two forms of plurality in Korean is that the ‘deul' noun shows distributivity but the bare noun expresses collectivity. However, now I show that distributivity/collectivity is not the meaning difference between the two forms of plurality in Korean. Moreover, new data from a corpus research show that the ‘deul' plural form is related to some vague quantity. This behavior of ‘deul', together with its affinity with human nouns, can be accounted for when we consider its individuality. Individuality of the ‘deul' noun is no more than its plurality. Although bare noun forms (without ‘deul') express plurality too, the difference between the two forms of plurality can be captured with the notion of markedness. Namely, the ‘deul' plural is "marked" while the bare noun is not.
