Abstract

Accusative marker 'lul', 'etten', partitives, and plural marker 'tul' have often been treated as Korean specificity markers. This paper shows that none of them represents specificity properly, and proposes that 'lul' is responsible for focus rather than specificity. This proposal means that 'lul' is an example of the grammaticalization of relational givenness rather than referential givenness. In Korean, unlike other languages, scrambling and extraction are triggered by focus rather than specificity, and require 'lul', which supports the idea that the marker is for focus but not specificity.
