Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyse the grammaticality of the progressive in English. To achieve this purpose, Chomsky and Lasnik(1991)'s syntactic structure based on INFL split hypothesis is reviewed, the features of lexical aspect type are argued, and Thomson(2001)'s condition on time linking is considered. In this paper, the features of lexical aspect such as Telicity, Dynamics, Instantaneousness are established based on the classification of Vendler(1967), Anderson(1991), and Verkyul(1993). It is considered that α and β must be within the same checking domain at LF in order for time α to link to time β. It is also shown that stative and achievement verbs cannot have progressive forms through feature checking in the syntactic structure.
