Abstract
Chae, Hee-Rahk. 2007. Clitics and a Classification of Parts of Speech in Korean. Korean Journal of Linguistics, 32-4, 803-826. This paper aims at providing a new classification of parts of speech in Korean. Our study starts from the observation that many elements which are traditionally regarded as (derivational) affixes are actually clitics. We have not only "bound words," which are typical clitics, but also "obligatory leaners," which have more phonological independence than bound words. As these clitics are words syntactically, they should also be classified into parts of speech. It is clear that all the members of postpositions and delimiters are clitics. In this paper, it is shown that nouns, adjectives/stative verbs, prenominals and adverbs have clitic members as well as regular word members. Especially, nouns have both bound words and obligatory leaners. Bound word nouns cannot be modified by prenominals, while obligatory leaner nouns can. The existence of clitics has some important implications on the spacing between words and/or word-like elements in writing. There are some inconsistencies in current regulations on the treatment of word-like elements, mostly clitics. As we have identified two different types of clitics, we can provide a set of systematic regulations on the spacing. (Hankuk University of Foreign Studies)
