초록

This paper aims to explain semantic properties of Korean aspectual auxiliary predicate constructions, '-e ka-ta’ and '-e o-ta.' They belong to event function and take event structure of proceeding sentence including main verb. In the syntactic structure of the Korean auxiliary predicates, the previous studies suggest that the Korean auxiliary predicate is a sister constituent of its main sentence. This opinion offers an evidence for the event function of aspectual auxiliary predicate constructions, '-e ka-ta’ and '-e o-ta.' In the semantic aspect, this paper observes the distribution of '-e ka-ta’ and '-e o-ta' considering the event-structure type of preceeding sentences and accounts for aspectual interpretation depending on their distribution. Many previous studies suggest that '-e ka-ta’ and '-e o-ta' mean only 'continuation.' However, we find out that distribution and meaning interpretation of '-e ka-ta' and '-e o-ta' are very different from each other. The results are as follows: Based on these results, I define the event functions, 'e_ka-ta’ and 'e_o-ta' at the basic level. The event function 'e_ka-ta’ takes accomplishment event and overlapping event as its input and derives accomplish event as its output, that is the meaning of the whole sentence. On the other hans, the event function 'e_o-ta' is so complicated. It takes accomplishment event and overlapping event as its input but derives different aspectual interpretations as its output. Degree achievement events can be derived to accomplishment event through Rothstein(2004)'s type shifting operation. Therefore, the event function 'e_o-ta' assigns another headeness to headed subevent.
