초록

The purpose of this paper is to explain the semantic relevance of the motion verb ‘kata’ and the auxiliary verb ‘kata’ used in the ‘V-e kata’ construction based on argument structure and event structure. The meaning of the motion verb ‘kata’ can be interpreted in various ways depending on which of its arguments-direction, goal, or path-is realized. Furthermore, the entailment of the sentence also varies depending on which arguments the verb ‘kata’ appears with. With its multiple senses, ‘kata’ shares a common semantic element, which is the ‘GO’ function. Additionally, ‘kata’ has a complex event structure composed of processes and states. Depending on which element is headedness and which element is specified, various meanings of ‘kata’ are derived. As the motion verb ‘kata’ undergoes grammaticalization, its meaning becomes bleached, indicating not the movement of an entity but the progression of event change. Consequently, the auxiliary verb ‘kata’ takes only preceding verbs that denote events with final points. Additionally ‘kata’ serves the function of assigning the headedness on sub-events of the process close to their final point in a complex event structure.
