초록
In Korean, there are such a great variety of diminutives that their comprehensive, systematic description would require a tremendous amount of time and effort. This article deals with twelve diminutives in Old Korean chosen from the entries of an Old Korean dictionary. We analyze their phonological or free variants and define their semantic functions. The diminutives are classified into two groups: 1. Vowel-Initial Diminutives(VID): The diminutives in this group begin with a vowel (e.g., -ag, -al, -ang, -eul, -eob, -ong, -aj, -ae, -am). 2. Consonant-Initial Diminutives(CID): These begin with a consonant (e.g., -geul, -wal, -zeonggwi). Both groups of diminutives are suffixes and their semantic function is to attenuate or narrow down the meanings of the base morphemes to which they are affixed or to strengthen the meanings of the original base morphemes. This description of Old Korean diminutives should be supplemented with that of modern and dialectal diminutives. The Korean language has many delicate devices to make it highly expressive. It seems to me that the abundance of Korean diminutives is one of the distinguishing characteristics of Korean.
