'Tense' errors made by Chinese learners of Korean have been mainly attributed to the effects of the native language. However, this article aims to analyze Chinese learners' tense errors by focusing on 'text.' I first identified the distribution of tense errors found in the learners' compositions, and then conducted a survey of tense form choices using a questionnaire, in order to examine whether the survey result corresponds to the distribution. The contexts in which the Chinese learners made tense errors were then classified based on the distribution. The learners decided which tense to choose on the basis of expressions, such as time adverbs, which clearly indicate the temporality of sentences. When clear time expressions were absent, they considered the order of events in the preceding and following clauses or sentences in making tense decisions. However, the Chinese learners' tense errors were unavoidable since tense in Korean is determined by the context of a paragraph or an entire text, a unit larger than a sentence. Therefore, the instruction of Korean tense for Chinese learners needs to be provided at the level of not only sentences but also paragraphs and the entire texts.
