This study analyzes the usage of the Korean concessive expression ‘-eoya’ in discourse. For this research, 914 examples of Korean written and semi-spoken corpus were examined, and the following results were obtained. First, the concessive expression ‘-eoya’ has syntactic constrictions when combined with pre-final endings of aspect and when used in a modal expression in sentences. Second, ‘-eoya’ holds three different meanings that change according to its distribution and the context: (1) useless, (2) to a certain degree, and (3) the degree of severity of a situation is emphasized. Third, the concessive expression ‘-eoya’ has no constraints in usage in terms of contextual characteristics of scenes and has pragmatic functions that differ depending on the contextual factors surrounding the discourse. These results suggest that meanings of grammatical forms are not fixed but rather continue to change in communication contexts. That is, it means that grammar cannot be discussed separately from not only linguistic form and meaning but also the context in which it is used.
