와즈디 무아와드(Wajdi Mouawad)는 레바논 출신의 캐나다 작가로서 현재 프랑스어권 연극에서 많은 관심을 받고 있는 극작가이자 연출가이다. 그는 레바논 내전으로 인해 가족과 함께 고국을 떠나 프랑스, 캐나다 등을 떠돌았다. 이러한 그의 삶의 경험들은 자신이 추구하는 연극의 근간이 되었으며, 그는 특히 작품에서 망명으로 인해 잃어버린 자아와 레바논인이라는 자신의 정체성을 찾고자 노력한다. 그의 초기작인 <연안지대>(1999)는 <화염>(2003), <숲>(2006), <하늘>(2009) 등과 함께 무아와드의 대표작으로 꼽히고 있다. 그는 이 작품을 통해 퀘벡 연극계의 관심을 받았으며, 나중에는 유럽에 진출하여 큰 반향을 불러일으키기도 했다. <연안지대>에는 무아와드의 작품세계가 잘 드러나 있다. 파롤은 그의 연극에서 중요한 부분을 차지하는데, 이는 무아와드가 인물들을 통해 레바논 내전에 대해 발언함으로써 자신의 고국의 현실을 여과 없이 보여주기 때문이다. 그는 내전이라는 아픈 과거를 경험했으나, 이 과거를 숨기지 않고 드러내는 것이 중요하다고 보았다. ‘말한다(Parole)’는 것은 자신의 상처를 드러내 보임으로서 자신뿐만 아니라 레바논인들이 겪은 피로 얼룩진 역사를 잊지 않기 위함이다. 본 논문은 <연안지대>를 통해 무아와드만의 극작 스타일과 연극 세계에 대해 밝히는데 목적이 있다.
Abstract
Wajdi Mouawad, a Canadian writer who was born in Lebanon, is a playwriter and director who gathers attention in French plays. He left his country with his family due to the civil war of Lebanon and wandered around France and Canada. His life became the basis of his plays that he pursues, and he especially tries to find his identity as a Lebanese that he lost because of asylum. The work <Littoral> is considered as his representative work along with <Incendies>(2003), <Forêts>(2006) and <Ciels>(2009). In addition, he received attention of the theatrical world through this work, and later, he entered Europe and caused big sensation. 『Littoral』 can be regarded as a healing play that cures his own wounded heart due to asylum. ‘Parole’ is especially important in his plays because it can convey what he experienced via writing and performance to others. Even though he has painful past, he never hides it but keeps revealing. By revealing his wound, he tries to remember the bloody scene of history that he and Lebanese experienced. This study is intended to find out what Mouawad tries to say through 『Littoral』, how his own writing is developed, and what correlation this work has with his private life.
