Abstract
Wajdi Mouawad(1968-), a man of the theater in Quebec who is Lebanon, is the writer and director who represents Francophone plays as the artistic director of Theatre national de la Colline in France. He had to live in exile wandering France and Canada with his family due to Lebanon civil war which broke out in 1975. This civil war which continued for 15 years caused all Lebanese as well as Wajdi Mouawad great pain. This scar is contained in his major works including Littoral(1999) and Incendies(2003). Mouawad is leading us to a long journey to Lebanon through the characters just like his alter ego representing his mind such as Wilfrid and Simon. Like as Mouawad, the characters like Wilfrid or Simon forget the lives of themselves and their families in their homeland due to the political exile. After they enter Lebanon because of their parents’ death, they realize that the fear, nightmare, and impressive stories are contained in it. Even though digging out veiled family history by each character is dangerous just like opening Pandora’s box, it is too much pressure to ignore it as their parents’ will should be followed. Mouawad starts healing the wound in his heart by participating in the journey for finding the root of alter ego-like characters in his works. Even though he suffers as an immigrant writer who has left his homeland, Lebanon, he aims to face his trauma that should be dealt with one day. His childhood is still suffering in Lebanon. This is the reason why he continuously digs into Lebanon.
