Abstract

Forêts , the third installment in Wajdi Mouawad's tetralogy, marks significant a departure from his earlier works, which were not deeply rooted in the author's personal family history. Instead, this play is set against the backdrop of major events in modern European history - such as the Franco-Prussian War, World War I, and World War II - and offers a compelling exploration of how a family's fate unfolds amid sweeping historical upheavals. The narrative delves into the complex interplay between individual choices, familial legacy, and the broader currents of history, posing profound questions about the human condition through the recurring theme of promises. In Mouawad's tragic vision, the focus lies not on characters succumbing to the inescapable weight of fate, but on the choices they make that ultimately lead to their downfall. Mouawad's tragedies do not center on protagonists crushed by an overwhelming and inescapable reality. Rather, the essence of his drama lies in witnessing how they become tragic figures through the very choices they make. His characters must face the consequences of their actions and bear the weight of responsibility. The curse that haunts the Keller family begins with a seemingly minor incident but evolves into a deep and enduring tragedy spanning 150 years. As the narrative progresses, each generation becomes caught in an inescapable web of suffering. Yet, it is ultimately through the resolute actions of strong-willed women such as Ludivine and Loup that the cycle of doom is broken. Forêts reimagines the archetypal structures of Greek tragedy in a modern context, allowing Mouawad's tragic narrative to evolve on a new level.
