Abstract

This study investigates the determinants of the household debt ratio at the aggregate level through an econometric analysis of a cross-country panel data consisting of 12 countries from 2003 to 2012. The estimation results demonstrate that the growth rate of housing price and the credit standard of financial institutions have significant effects on changes in household debt ratios. On the contrary, other economic factors such as consumer confidence, interest rate, and consumer price inflation rate do not have a significant effect on household debt ratio. In particular, this study finds that easing of the credit standard of financial institutions contributed to the buildup of household debt before the global financial crisis especially for countries with high household debt ratios. Such a finding implies that the credit standard should be an important part of the policy package to deal with growing household debt.
