초록
This paper examines the process of global financial big bang and financial restructuring and proposes the strategies for enhancing competitiveness of credit unions. The korean government has restructured financial institutions and reformed the financial system since the financial crisis in 1997. Although a wide range of reforms have made financial systems more competitive and market driven, they also resulted in huge transition costs, increasing gaps between banks and credit cooperative institutions. Credit unions have played very important roles in supplying loans to households and firms which have vulnerable credit standings and have tightly constrained access to bank credit service. But many of them have closed and have lost their operational grounds by financial restructuring, and so the lower income households and small-medium firms with vulnerable credit scores have been faced with increased financial constraints. Credit unions should more actively ease their financial constraints and reform supervisory system. Also they should enhance competitiveness by reforming the managing system and risk management, reinforcing relationship banking and local community based specialization strategies, nurturing professional human resources and promoting community development through social activities.
