한국 신협의 세 가지 도전적 과제

초록

한국 신협은 1980년대 이후 서민금융기관으로서의 길을 계속 추구하고 있다. 그러나 그러한 전략이 성공을 거두고 있다고 생각하는 사람은 많지 않은 것 같다. 오히려 정부는 신협의 성과에 불만을 토로하고 있으며, 차입자에 대한 정보의 비대칭성을 완화하기 위해 노력하도록 독려하고 있다. 한국 신협은 아직도 경영을 안정시키지 못하고 있다. 최근에는 금융기관으로서의 평판도 좋지 못하며 평판위험을 완화하기 위해 노력하도록 요구받고 있다. 서민금융기관으로서의 길이 계속 지켜내야 할 바람직한 모델인가 하는 의문이 제기되는 것도 이 때문이다. 나아가 서민금융기관으로 된 것 자체가 협동조합으로서 정체성을 상실했다는 것을 보여주는 다른 표현이라는 비판에도 직면하고 있다. 이 글은 한국 신협이 당면하고 있는 이러한 문제점을 그것이 해결해야 할 세 가지 과제를 통해 검토하는데 목적이 있다.

Abstract

The Korea Credit Union thinks it should be a bank for the poor. That strategy has been adopted and pursued since 1980s. But there are not many who think their strategy has been successful. The government which complains about its limited outcomes as a bank for the poor urges them to try hard to ease the asymmetric information about the borrowers. The performance of the Korea Credit Union is not stabilized yet. Recently it is said that its reputation even as a financial company is not good enough, so it is required to improve its reputational risk. Questions are being raised whether the road to the bank for the poor is a good model worth maintaining. Furthermore some says its identity as a cooperative is in danger. This paper picks up three challenging tasks of the Korea Credit Union and examines in detail.
