The financial liberalization policies in 1980s and 1990s in Korea gave rise to a widespread financial structural changes. The Korea credit unions tried hard to enhance their competitiveness and to promote them to a higher position in the financial industry, and they continuously asked the government to ease various kinds of regulations imposed upon them. But the government turned down their requests on the grounds that their true competitiveness would be enhanced if they firmly followed the principles of credit cooperatives. We can say that the instability of their businesses was one of the important factors that prevented them from getting government support. But the measures of the government had some flaws. They should help them to succeed and develop the spirits of the cooperatives while adapting themselves to the changing economic and financial environments.
Abstract
The financial liberalization policies in 1980s and 1990s in Korea gave rise to a widespread financial structural changes.
