Abstract

The purpose of this study is to illuminate nowaday’s school subjects education from the viewpoint of Kant’s and Hegel’s epistemological view, and thereby explore its limit and possibility. For this purpose, this study compares their epistemological views by focusing their arguments on the concept(Begriff) that they regard as the core of knowledge. In this comparison, Kant’s view shows it as a negative medium toward the unknowable Idea, whereas Hegel’s view exposes it as a positive self-manifestation of the living Idea, so-called Spirit(Geist). And this difference implies the difference between their positions on metaphysics as knowledge of the Idea. That is, in Kant’s position, the concept can be reflected as an objective and legitimate product of Understanding (Verstand) on empirical objects but a critical limitation on all the metaphysical attempts to transcend over the boundary of experience. In Hegel’s position, however, such reflection is tied down on the level of Consciousness (Bewusstsein) that treats itself as the mind distinctive from object, and then conversely dependant to it. On the contrary, the concept can be comprehended by Reason(Vernünft) as the original identity between mind and object, implicit into Understanding’s cognitive activity, and such comprehension or conceptual thinking exhibits it as a core of Spirit’s self-knowledge beyond the level of Consciousness, so-call Science(Wissenschaft). Consequently, Hegel’s view suggests an alternative interpretation on nowaday’s school subjects education as follows: in nowaday’s notion, the subjects, especially natural sciences such as dynamics, chemistry, biology, and so forth, seem to be kinds of object-knowledge indifferent to learner’s mind. This view, however, is limited on the level of Consciousness without reference to its education, or its developmental movement through self-knowing activity. On the contrary, as far as focusing the aspect of conceptual thinking or self-knowing latent into them, the subjects mean as the systems of concepts organized according to the developmental modes of Consciousness, that is, learner’s cognitive levels, and then each of them has the potential of Spirit’s self-knowledge.
