Abstract
This study is to explore the meanings of school subjects and the significances of school education in view of R. G. Collingwood's theory of knowledge. Teaching and learning of a school subject cannot accomplish the ultimate goal of education as long as it remains at the level of stuffing mind with abstractions which is called ‘knowledge’. Because mind is never to be affected by the external things which have separate existences in abstract knowledge. Education is basically a twofold activity of acquiring abstractions from various sciences on the one hand, and of overcoming those abstractions by reflecting on what has been acquired in the mind, on the other. The acquisition of self knowledge is not only possible but necessary wherever knowledge education occurs. The development of human mind consists of the development of knowledge as self conscious. Therefore there is no other way of developing the mind of our students except teaching them various school subjects in self conscious way. Collingwood's view of knowledge, of self knowledge, can provide the idea of knowledge education with the philosophical basis necessary for the explanation of the development of mind through knowledge education.
