Abstract
This study aims to elucidate Hegel’s unique view on the meaning and necessity of school based on his theory of philosophy and education, showing his unique practice as rector of the Nürnberg gymnasium and head teacher of philosophy, and thereby provide some suggestions for present school education. Thus, this study articulates the so-called “viewpoint of essence” and “viewpoint of utility” as today’s two prevalent but oppositional viewpoints on the meaning and necessity of school, and examines how they are synthesized in his view and practice. In Hegel’s perspective, school means “a place of self-estrangement,” namely “a place of becoming unfamiliar,” and behind it, “Spirit” (Geist) is alive implicitly, which makes itself estrange from familiarity of natural and everyday life and prepares for explicit self-realization through its own comprehensive thinking in real world. The entry into society from school means explicit self-return from the unfamiliar state to the implicit Spirit of the real world. Therefore, from the perspective of the self-realized Spirit that has returned to itself in this way, the school as a place of self-estrangement is a front line for the genuine realization of essence and true fulfillment of utility. It is a difficult place where a student estranges oneself from ordinary daily life of society, and simultaneously a passionate place where the most essential and useful preparation is made for realizing the true and free self implicit in the life. Futhermore, from the perspective of the student preparing to enter into society, school education by which one makes oneself resolutely estrange from the familiar self is the purposive and spontaneous activity for which one cannot help but earnestly desire, in order to realize one’s own true and free self in society.
