Abstract

The purpose of this article is to review the conceptual bases of communication characteristics of autism and the research results using two modes of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC); Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) and Speech Generative Devices (SGD) with individuals with autism. The results of use of both PECS and SGD for children with autism appear to be effective in teaching requesting skills for children with autism and may lead to improvements in other areas such as speech and problem behavior. As a results of the review on the research on both systems, future research areas are identified as following. First, future studies migh assess the generalization of treatment effects across school, home, and community settings. Second, research is needed to compare the use of different AAC options and lastly, identify individual differences in performance, and attempts to associate these differences with specific child characteristics.
