Abstract
This study investigated whether compliance to a stop request learned in the training lab can generalize to regular academic and play classes in three children with autism who were non-compliant and had disruptive behavior problems. The stop request compliance training was conducted in a lab that contained three desks facing different walls with toys on each desk; the child made a round of the three desks. If the child stopped playing at the training teacher's request, his compliance was reinforced and the child was allowed to move to the next desk for another toy play. The three childrens compliance increased from the range of 16.0%-36.8% in the baseline to the range of 79.8%-96.6% in their regular academic sessions, and from the range of 11.3%-37.5% in the baseline to the range of 73.7%-81.0% in their regular play sessions, respectively. When the token trading was added, their compliance rates further improved to the range of 86.0%-100% in all three children. Their compliance rates well maintained to the range of 87.8% to 96.0%, and 73.0% to 99.3% at follow-up sessions that took place 1 and 6 weeks later, respectively.
