Abstract

Paralinguistic expressions of on-line messages are visual surrogates of facial, vocal and behavioral cues in real life communications. This paper tried to examine a relationship between paralinguistic expressions of Internet, such as emoticons, punctuations, and phonetic vocalizations and six categories of publicness of on-line verbal messages. According to the results, authenticity, formality, politeness, impartiality, communicability were statistically significantly related with presence of paralinguistic expressions. Those symbols were tended to be used when messages violated authenticity, formality, politeness, communicability. And the numbers of types of on-line paralinguistic expressions( phonetic vocalizations, punctuations, emoticons) used were statistically related with formality, politeness, moderation of verbal messages. This fact might imply that traits such as the conventionality of use and the relationships with verbal languages of emoticons, punctuations, phonitic vocalizations were different.
