Abstract

The purpose of this study was to reveal that language use is a critical factor in explaining opinion polarization. In Study 1, contents of uncivil/hateful online comments on three issues (approval rate for the President, discontinuance of the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family, & labor-management conflict) in portal news and YouTube were analyzed. In Study 2, based on a national survey, the roles of interpersonal and media language use in polarization-relevant judgments were explored. Results of Study 1 showed that more uncivil/hateful comments and lower levels of respectfulness of language were found in portal news than in YouTube. In the issue of the President's approval rate, uncivil comments were more directed to conservatives in both the platforms; in the issue of the discontinuance of the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family, uncivil comments on YouTube were more directed to conservatives, while those on portal news to liberals; in labor-management conflict issue, uncivil comments were irrelevant to political orientation. Study 2 showed that interpersonal language use types were categorized as 3 factors (aggressiveness, responsiveness, and placidity), while media language use types as 2 factors (aggressiveness and placidity). Aggressiveness in media language use was generally higher than that in interpersonal language use. The lower the aggressiveness and the higher the responsiveness in language use, the more serious polarization between liberals-conservatives was perceived. Furthermore, the higher the aggressiveness in language use, election was perceived as a more effective solution to reduce polarization, and not the policy. Actual use of uncivil language was more frequent than that of hateful language (Study 1), while thinking the latter should be more avoided than the former to prevent opinion polarization (Study 2). Because the aggressive tendency in language use was related with stronger negative responses in online comments, it was suggested that the aggressiveness of language use in online comments might be an important factor to explain opinion polarization.
