Abstract
Emoticons are iconic expressions made of ASCII characters symbolizing nonverbal behaviors. These simplified icons add subtle meanings to text-only messages, or affect illocutionary forces of a message. As nonverbal behaviors contribute to sequences of relational control aspect which is natural element of human interaction, it is assumed that emoticons have relationship with interpersonal judgment such as control dimension among online participants. This paper investigated whether people use emoticons to control others with whom they have relationship met on the Internet. Online chatting messages which imply relationally controlling act were gathered and analyzed. It was reported that online chatting participants used emoticons more when they typed messages which have one-upmanship such as instruction or order, which implied relational control. It can be concluded that some of icon-characters are online counterparts of nonverbal behavior in off-line communication environments.
