압축적 시간성을 통한‘바쁨’: 서울지역 중간계급 유배우 취업여성을 중심으로

이 연구는 “빨리빨리”, “바쁘다 바빠”라는 언설을 쉽게 접할 수 있고 부부공동 부양자 가족이 늘고 있는 현실에서, 중간계급 화이트칼라 유배우 취업여성이 일상을 어떻게 보내고 있는지를 ‘바쁨’이라는 언설을 중심으로 분석하는 것이다. 이러한 연구목적을 달성하기 위하여 서울 지역에 거주하는 유배우 정규직 여성을 인터뷰하였다. 연구의 주요개념은 ‘압축적 시간성’이다. 18세기 이후의 부계 편중적인 유교적 가족ㆍ친족 제도, 초기 산업화ㆍ근대화 과정을 포함하고 있는 일제 식민지 시기, 미군정과 한국전쟁을 겪으며 빠른 근대화를 경험한 한국사회에서, 특히 글로벌 시티로 성장하고 있는 서울 지역에서 중간계급 취업여성의 일-가족을 중심으로한 시간 경험은 압축을 중심으로 한 복잡성을 포함하고 있다. 시계시간 규범과 유기체적 시간과의 충돌, 경계의 강화와 해체, 전통ㆍ(후기)근대성ㆍ식민지성 등의 다양한 시간성이 섞여 있는 불균등성과 이질성, 상이한 시간성을 둘러싼 조화ㆍ협상ㆍ타협뿐 아니라 그것을 둘러싼 갈등으로 구성되고 있다. 가족은 빠른 시간 안에 일을 처리하는 곳으로서, 소비가 합리적으로 실현되고 가족관계의 질이 효율적으로 관리되어야 하는 탈근대의 고도 관리 장소가 되어가고 있다. 무한경쟁, 미래에 대한 불안감이 강화되는 한국사회에서 평등한 부부로 기대되었던 공동부양자 부부 모두가 젠더갈등의 원인을 외주화함으로써, 경제적 동맹자로 서로를 의미화하고 장시간 노동을 유지시키며 가족주의를 강화시키는 위험을 내포하고 있다. 본 연구는 질적 방법으로 시간을 연구함으로써 시간 사용을 둘러싼 특정 시간의 내용과 의미, 특정 시간들 사이의 관계를 질문하고 이를 통해 성평등을 둘러싼 일상의 구조를 드러냈다는 점에서 의의를 갖는다.
Abstract
As we easily hear people’s remark “Quick! Quick!” or “Hurry! Hurry!” and the number of dual-earner couples is increasing, the present study analyzed how middle-class white-collar married and employed women lead their everyday life, focused on remarks related to ‘business.’ For the purpose of this study, I interviewed married and permanently employed women living in Seoul, and the major concept of research is compressed time experience. Korean society has experienced fast modernization through the patricentric Confucian family-kinship system since the 18th century, the period under the rule of Japanese imperialism that includes the early stage of industrialization and modernization, the American Military Government, and the Korean War. In its capital Seoul, which is growing into a global city, time experiences of middle-class employed women who have maintained a long labor career have complexity centering on compression. There are not only conflicts between clock time rules and organic time, the reinforcement and disintegration of boundaries, non-uniformity and heterogeneity in which various temporalities are mixed including tradition, (neo) modernism and colonialism, and harmony, negotiation and compromise over different temporalities, but also compressed time management related to pressure on individual workers for high productivity and conflicts surrounding the time management. Family is a place of skillful management where things should be done quickly within a limited time, consumptions should be made rationally, and the quality of family relations should be controlled. In Korean society characterized by infinite competition and high anxiety about the future, dual-earner couples who are expected to be equal to each other have the risk of signifying each other as an economic ally by outsourcing the causes of gender conflict, and strengthening familism through maintaining long-hour labor. The present study is meaningful in that it studied time qualitatively and inquired into the contents and meanings of time and relations among specific times, and by doing so, revealed the structure of daily life surrounding gender equality.
