Abstract

To discuss women in kijich’on is itself a politics of representation. The ways in which camptown prostitutes have been interpellated are fraught with politics, because their identities and experiences have been continuously re-represented and re-constituted through the discursive competition among imperial(colonial) “I/eye,” colonized nationalist “I/eye,” and non-representative people’s “I/eye.” Crucial to understand the underlying ideologies to constitute the kijich’on women is to explore the ways in which “yanggongju” have been named or addressed throughout the Korea’s modern history intertwined with androcentric culture, colonialism, racism, and gendered nationalism. Therefore, my questions are about what constitutes the category of “kijich’on women,” how what is assumed to be true about the category of “kijich’on women” is constructed, and what ideologies are (re)produced. My aim here in this paper is neither “to preclude the possibility of feminism as a representational politics,” nor to reclaim “a true identity” of military prostitutes as the fictive foundation for “my” analytic legitimacy. Rather, at “the historical present” as Butler put it, I attempt to critique the categorical identities of military prostitutes that hegemonic power structures “engender, naturalize, and immobilize,” while taking into account of “the constitutive powers of their own representational claims”(Butler 1999, 8-9). As such, I demonstrate that the presumed universality of the (male)subject/object is ironically undermined by the constraints of the representational discourses constituted by the very structures of power and the un-fixedness of the signifier, “yanggongju,” examining what relations of domination and exclusion are inadvertently produced and sustained by the politics of representation. In sum, this paper seeks to reveal how the category of kijich’on women as others is produced and maintained by the very structures of androcentric power through which emancipation seems to be sought and realized, which can shed lights on feminist radical critique of gendered nationalism as well as complex understanding of subaltern women from a postcolonial feminist perspective.
