Abstract

This paper attends to the recent emergence of misogyny in late-modern, neo-liberal Korean society by retracing the affective mobilization of hate among the Ilbe, Megalia and Womad. While Ilbe, a far right male conservative group that blamed feminism and women for their "loss" of male privilege, and in so doing proliferated digital misogyny, Megalia, a spontaneous and voluntary digital feminist activism stood against Ilbe with their parodic resistance called "mirroring." The practice of "mirroring", I argue, though, fails to radically deconstruct the affective grammar of hate but only culturally appropriates it. Womad, which split from Megalia over the controversy of online gay bashing, soon established itself as a site of separatist and essentialist feminist politics. Keeping men, gays, and trans women out of their own version of gynotopia and 'radical' feminist activism, they produced an essentialist brand of cultural feminism. In conclusion, I argue that feminist politics needs to carefully understand its own historical conditions of speech and acts so as not to reproduce the larger structures of neoliberal violence against minority subjects.
